2023.12.01
1 November 1st (Wed), we were fortunate enough to co-host a workshop with SThree, a global STEM-specialist recruiting company. As part of our Social Innovation Accelerate program here at the School of Social Sciences, we have been working towards providing students with opportunities that enable them to cultivate key academic and life skills.

In this issue, we report on a workshop held by student mentors!

This time, we were able to welcome professional recruiters working in the STEM field from SThree for an English resume and interview workshop!

Introductions

Students divided up into small groups of 3-4, where they were first introduced to the main operations of SThree. As the global STEM-specialist talent partner, their mission is “Bringing skilled people together to build the future”. Focusing on the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics fields (STEM), participants learned about the importance of STEM-related skills in the coming future, that aren’t exclusive to the academic STEM disciplines.
Resume workshop
After a brief ice-breaking session among the groups comprised of both undergraduate and graduate students, participants engaged in discussions regarding what makes a good resume. Based on two real-life resume samples, the workshop enabled students to discuss the positive aspects of each resume. Each group was paired with an SThree member, allowing students to engage in in-depth discussions.
Interview workshop
Following the resume workshop, students discussed significant details of job interviews alongside SThree members. Discussion topics included the purpose of job interviews, as well as the types of questions that should be asked by the candidates at the end of the interviews. Gaining insight from the SThree members, students shared their personal take on what the interviewers may look for in candidates.
At the end of the discussions, students were given time to ask personal and specific questions regarding their own resumes and experiences with the application process. Students expressed that this was especially a valuable section of the workshop!

Thank you again to SThree for such a meaningful workshop, as participants expressed their appreciation for an “engaging and informative” session that allowed them to “learn from the perspective of the recruiters” and “gain knowledge about the STEM industry”. Through an interactive workshop with open and friendly SThree members, we were able to host an incredibly valuable event!
In cultivating a learning ecosystem, we, SSS mentors will continue to work towards hosting valuable events and workshops!
